Basement Mold Growth
Q & A
|
Question: |
|
|
I have had a water
leak in the basement for a long period of time. The house is 7 years
old. I fixed the leak
and put a dehumidifier in the basement. The humidity level is
currently 50%. I have been getting rid of all contents in the
basement. Now I am
overwhelmed in the clean up and guilt process for not knowing. I am
presently washing with a water bleach solution. There is some black
mold attached to the floor joists and stairs. I am wiping down the
unpainted stairs and thinking about painting them with a mold type
paint sealer. I now realize it is
a bad problem. My question is, how to and what are the best cleaning
solutions to purchase. Will the mold die if moisture level were
removed and wiped down? Please share your knowledge with me so I can
protect my family. [Aug. 18, 2003]

You need to use a
powerful dehumidifier set to run until the indoor humidity reaches
only 30 to 40%, a level that discourages indoor mold growth. You need
to do all of the mold remediation steps that are explained at
Mold Removal. You need to mold test the air in the basement, all
rooms above, the attic, and the outward flow of your heating/cooling
duct registers for the possible presence of elevated levels of
airborne mold spores, which, if present, would indicate a serious mold
infestation problem that may be widespread in your house from
cross-contamination from basement mold. You can use do it yourself
mold test kits from a large hardware or home improvement store,
or hire a
Certified Mold Inspector [Mold
Profession]. |

Our basement
recently had water drain into our in-floor ducting system. We pumped
out the water, but now we have white fluffy mold growing in our
basement. What is it and are there any health concerns we should be
aware of? How should we get rid of it? [August 17, 2003] |

Using clear Scotch
tape, 1 inch wide and 3 inches long, use the
Lift Tape Sampling method to collect a physical sample of the
suspect mold growth for submission to our Mold Inspector Laboratory.
How-to-do lift tape sampling and information on do it yourself mold
test kits from a large hardware or home improvement store.. You should use
the mold test kits to mold test the air of the basement, attic,
rooms of your home, and the outward air flow from heating/cooling duct
registers to determine the possible presence of elevated levels of
airborne mold spores, in comparison to an outdoor control test. Your
most urgent step is to make sure you have solved the water problem.
Water
problems make
mold problems.
Effectively test your entire home for toxic
mold, black mold, and/or any type of mold growth either by hiring a
Certified Mold Inspector
or using mold test kits. For an effective, affordable, and
Mold Fungicide, use one of the
Mold Home Remedy
Recipes.
